For the past six years, baseball has been our world. Spring, summer, fall…you name it, we were at the ball field. Baseball was the sport Griffin knew and loved. So when his friends decided it was time to try something new, and that something new happened to be football, it was definitely a little scary. (Probably more for me than him).
Trying a different sport might not sound like much of a “why not” moment to some. But when you are the smallest kid in class, lining up against kids twice your size who are ready to knock you down, it takes a lot of courage to say, “Sure, why not?”
And I will admit, as a mom, I always swore that Griffin would never play football because I was worried he would get hurt. But here we are, helmets and shoulder pads in hand. Maybe, just maybe, Griffin would prove me wrong and everything would be ok. Maybe football would become his new thing…who knows? But I do know one thing, Carson would be grinning ear to ear watching Griff give it a shot.
Fast forward to his very first scrimmage. Griffin caught the ball, took off running, and scored a touchdown. I can only imagine how much Carson would have loved seeing him run that fast. I am so proud of him for trying something new, even if I am a nervous wreck on the sidelines. But I am learning quickly that sometimes you just have to let them try. Who knows how long football will last, but for now I will be right there cheering him on, with my fingers secretly crossed for a return to baseball someday soon, lol.
And then I of course have to give a shout out to Emily. After years of being the little sister tagging along at the ball fields, it is finally her turn to step out of her comfort zone and give softball a try. Sure, there may have been a few cartwheels and dance moves mid-game, but at the end of the day, it is all about having fun and trying something new. Dance away out there, lil sis…because why not?
